Be Modern, Say “Hunday”
You hear the word "Hyundai” pronounced so many ways. (Japanese automakers pronounce it "Hoon-dye.”) But a Korean friend told me that if you want to impress your Korean colleagues, pronounce it "Hyun-day.” Emphasis is on the first syllable, and you hardly hear the ‘y' (as in ‘yes') sound.

This is how it is pronounced in the television commercials. In fact, their earliest commercials repeated, "Hyundai, as in Sunday.” She said, "Koreans do not correct people on their pronunciation.” "It's the little things that connect people to one another, and are important to build the relationship. They will be amazed if you pronounce it correctly, because they think that Americans just can't make the sound.”

And, in case you didn't know: "Hyundai” means "modern.”
